Protected market: Salvini pressing for extension, Fitto “does not understand the controversy”

Salvini meets Greek Transport Minister

(Finance) – The dossier on protected energy market warms the hearts of the majority and between the majority and the opposition. About a month after the clash that led the government to insert and then cancel a provision regarding the continuation of the guaranteed gas and electricity market from the agenda of the Council of Ministers, the disagreements return.

The topic is undoubtedly complex, tra the other inherited by the Meloni government from previous executives. It is also linked to the Pnrr and therefore, any exceptions to a stop require an exchange with the EU. However, it is also an issue that involves millions of users and on which the opposition comes down hard, speaking of the possible impact on bills as a “Melon tax,” a “Christmas gift” from the government to citizens.

In particular, the League, in favor of the extension from the first hour, he goes to press and the reply from Minister Raffaele Fitto immediately arrives, calling for calm to avoid controversy on a delicate topic. “We talked about the protected market this morning” – says Matteo Salvini – “and I am confident that through dialogue we will be able to remedy an error that we found on the table”. Salvini refers to an ongoing discussion with the European Commission and says he is confident that there can be a solution. The protected energy and gas market – is the reply of Minister Raffaele Fitto – “It’s a serious issue that we need to discuss on its merits. There are elements on which there is a debate, we will verify the ways in which we can follow this debate”.

“I spoke with Salvini – adds Fitto – and President Meloni is more than attentive. But frankly I don’t understand those who are making political controversy today, evidently they didn’t realize what was being done in 2022”. The issue remains, in fact, still on the table but the road towards exit from the protected market seems rather clear.
Among the hypotheses that the majority would be evaluating a timing that allows – as underlined by Forza Italia with Luca Squeri – “while the tenders are pending, a communication campaign for users to make an informed choice” of the operator.

Meanwhile, M5s, Pd and Avs ask that Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin reports to the Chamber also in light of the fact that in various bipartisan amendments, most recently also to the extensions decree, there were proposals to extend the entry into force of the stop on the protected market which takes effect on 10 January.
