Private funeral for slain OPP officer

A private funeral service for Ontario Provincial Police Const. Grzegorz (Greg) Pierzchala will be held Wednesday in his hometown of Barrie.

Pierzchala, 28, was fatally shot on Dec. 27 while responding to a vehicle in a ditch west of Hagersville in Haldimand County.

The OPP said in a news release Monday that the funeral service, which will be held at 11 am at the Sadlon Arena, 555 Bayview Dr., will be attended by the constable’s family, their guests, OPP members, representatives from other police services, Canadian Armed Forces members, emergency services personnel and officials.

“The funeral service is not open to the public.”

The OPP said the public can view the funeral on OPP social media platforms: YouTube (@ontarioprovincialpolice); Twitter (@OPP_News) and Facebook (@ontarioprovincialpolice).

Haldimand County said it will livestream the funeral on Wednesday at Caledonia Lions Hall, 100 Haddington St., Caledonia

Doors to the hall open at 10:30 am

“Our thoughts are with PC Pierzchala’s family and friends and all those who served alongside him,” Haldimand Mayor Shelley Bentley said in a news release. “Haldimand County is a close-knit community and many are feeling this loss deeply. Joining in remembrance at the local level is a way that we can come together as a community to grieve and honor a hero taken much too soon.”

A book of condolences will be available at the hall.

The book will then remain available at the Haldimand County Administration Building in Cayuga until Friday,

Randall McKenzie, 25, of Kingston and Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry, 30, of Hamilton are charged with first-degree murder in the constable’s death.
