The president of the Republic Alexander Stubb visited NATO’s Nordic Response military exercise in Norwegian Lapland, Alta, on Thursday.

The program started with a visit by the Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støren with in the field hospital set up outside the center of Alta. The field hospital, which is still empty for now, has operating rooms and specialist doctors.

The commanders of the Finnish and Norwegian land forces also met at the field hospital. The 4,000 Finnish soldiers participating in the NATO military exercise are not in Alta, however.

Later in the afternoon, Stubb and Støre transferred to the Norwegian Navy ship KV Bjørnøya for lunch and held press conferences there.

Nordic Response is NATO’s largest military exercise in decades. It takes place in the northern parts of Finland, Norway and Sweden and about 20,000 soldiers from 14 different countries participate in it.

For the first time, as a member of NATO, Finland participates in joint defense exercises.

The military exercise will continue until March 15.
