Police satisfied with performance at Eurovision in Malmö

– I am very satisfied with the police effort in connection with the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. Region Syd has handled the large police operation very well. The event was able to be carried out in a safe and secure way, while the police secured the opportunity for citizens to express different opinions in a democratic spirit – almost completely without disorder, says Per Engström, commanding officer for the national special event, which includes the spring’s many resource-demanding events.

The police operation in connection with the Eurovision song contest in Malmö is one of the most extensive ever in southern Sweden.

During the week, several demonstrations took place in Malmö. According to the police, most things have gone well, thanks in part to good dialogue with the organizers.

Broad cooperation

About 20 people were arrested in connection with an unauthorized demonstration outside Malmö Arena when the final took place, and one was arrested for violence against an official. Otherwise, the police are satisfied.

– The commotion that arose around Malmö Arena on Saturday evening has been handled in a professional manner, says head of command Petra Stenkula.

Several parts of the police have been involved in the operation during Eurovision week, including the national task force and the police aviation.

In addition, the police have coordinated the operation with several other actors, including Europol and Säpo.

– I want to thank everyone who contributed to the work. Now we are working on upcoming events, where we have concerts with Taylor Swift in Stockholm next weekend and upcoming EU elections with many public gatherings, says Per Engström.
