A “contentious eviction” in Bayham Township on Thursday drew a huge police presence including an armored truck to the Lake Erie village of Port Burwell in Elgin County.

Several police vehicles, a locksmith and other emergency vehicles filled the parking lot of the fire hall in Port Burwell, an hour southeast of London.

“The Elgin and Norfolk OPP are assisting the sheriff’s office with an eviction on Light Line in the Municipality of Bayham,” Elgin OPP Const. Brett Phair said in an email.

The eviction already has taken place and there is no threat to public safety, he said. No other details were released.

Police conducted a traffic stop Tuesday around 3:30 pm near Wellington and Ross streets after responding to a report of a suspicious U-Haul missing a large part of its windshield, St. Thomas police said.

Investigators recovered $100,000 worth of stolen tools, equipment and other items, including personal identification and bank cards that had been reported stolen in Ontario and Quebec, police said.

Two men of no fixed address, aged 39 and 40, face multiple charges including possession of property obtained by crime, obstructing police and failing to comply with a probation order. The 40-year-old man also faces additional drug possession and Highway Traffic Act charges.
