Police investigation closes Tecumseh Park in downtown Chatham

Hundreds of meters of crime scene tape was used to surround Tecumseh Park in downtown Chatham Monday morning as Chatham-Kent police investigated an incident.

More details are expected to come regarding the investigation and police say there is no threat to public safety.

Police issued a media release just before 4 am stating an active investigation had prompted the closure of a section of King Street West in downtown Chatham between Fifth and Sixth Streets as well as Tecumseh Park.

The public was asked to avoid the area.

A short time later, another media release asked the public to also avoid King Street West up to Fourth Street.

Shortly before 7:30 am, police issued a media release stating King Street was open again, but the public is asked to continue to avoid the Tecumseh Park area.

Before 9 am, the K9 unit showed up and within minutes police dog Helix and his partner Const. Michael Van Kesteren found something of interest in the grass.

A short time later a detective arrived to look at the area. This was followed by a forensic officer arriving to take some photographs of the area in the grass.
