Jill was last seen on Aug. 6 or Aug. 7 in the area of Market Street South near the Tim Horton’s plaza.

Brantford police aren’t releasing Jill’s last name under a new policy.

Police, under the new policy, will no longer routinely share a missing person’s gender or surname when a photograph of the missing individual is available for use, Robin Matthews-Osmond, the corporate communications manager for Brantford police, said.

By posting only the first name, missing persons can still be found, but their full names in not forever associated with the event, Matthews-Osmond said.

The gender of the missing person will no longer be indicated within the media release due to the potential to misidentify the sexual orientation of those who cannot be found. After the person has been located, public notice will be provided and any photos posted on social media/web pages managed by Brantford police will be removed.

“The goal of these changes is to better protect the missing person’s privacy while still sending out the information that is necessary and effective to locate them, maintaining the integrity of missing persons’ investigations.

Matthews-Osmond said the change in policy is in line with that of many other police services.
