Pinocchio on Netflix: should we see Guillermo del Toro’s film? Critical

Pinocchio on Netflix should we see Guillermo del Toros film

PINOCCHIO. The hero of Italian novels is entitled to a revisit on Netflix, signed Guillermo del Toro. The Mexican filmmaker signs a powerful and superb film on mourning. Critical.

[Mis à jour le 9 décembre 2022 à 9h00] The year 2022 will have offered two versions of Pinocchio. The first, live action adaptation of the Disney cartoon, was released on the platform of streaming in September. The second has just landed on Netflix this December 9, 2022. It would be tempting to play the games of the seven differences, but the comparison would not be flattering for the first as long as Guillermo del Toro delivers here a personal and visually stunning version of the puppet with an elongating nose.

Pinocchio on Netflix adapts the Italian tale of Carlo Collodi in Animation Film, thanks to stop motion (real objects, here puppets, create the illusion of movement) which gives the feature film superb photography and a captivating rhythm. Here, the plot is set in Mussolini’s Italy and allows Guillermo del Toro to deploy the anti-fascist discourse he was already developing in The labyrinth of Bang. But it is above all his remarks on death, filiation and the impossible mourning of a child that gives the strength of this story imbued with mad poetry. A new streaming release not to be missed!

Synopsis – Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson revisit the children’s classic written by Carlo Collodi. At the dawn of the Second World War in Italy, a carpenter destroyed by the death of his son, Geppetto builds in a moment of despair a wooden puppet in his effigy. It miraculously comes to life and behaves like a real little boy.

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro was one of the most anticipated streaming releases for moviegoers for the end of 2022. The stop-motion animated film can be discovered on netflix just before the holiday season. It was indeed on December 9, 2022 that French subscribers were able to begin to discover this feature film revisiting this classic of Italian literature.
