Pieterse, who had been labeled one of the favorites in advance, saw Burquier pull away in the second lap. The difference was up to ten seconds. Pieterse was unable to join Burquier in the remaining three rounds, who was crowned junior world champion last year. Pieterse finally conceded 43 seconds on Burquier. The gap between Burquier and number three Pedersen was 59 seconds.
