Petter Northug’s sawing of Sebastian Samuelsson – the words that no one expected: “Must say it…”

Bronze for Sweden in the mixed relay.
Then Petter Northug was really critical – of Sebastian Samuelsson.
– I expected more, says the Norwegian icon.

Sebastian Samuelsson hasn’t had the season everyone was hoping for. He certainly looked very strong during the premiere in Östersund during the early winter, but after that Samuelsson has struggled both in the track and on the shooting range. And he himself has expressed some concern ahead of the WC premiere.

Northug’s unexpected criticism

Samuelsson had the honor of going out on the first stretch during the premiere of this year’s Biathlon World Cup. However, Samuelsson created a real uphill climb for his teammates, Martin Ponsiluoma, Hanna Öberg and Elvira Öberg – but in the end it was a bronze for Sweden after a raging drama on the last stretch.

Afterwards came unexpected criticism of Samuelsson’s effort – from none other than Petter Northug. The Norwegian long-distance icon is now an expert on Norwegian TV2, even during major biathlon events. And he was disappointed with what Samuelsson showed on Wednesday.

– I have to say that I had expected more from Sebbe, says Northug to SVT.

“I believe and hope…”

Northug generally thinks that Samuelsson had a weak winter, but that there are glimmers of light.

– The season has been bad and he said so himself when I spoke to him. He was disappointed and looking for the form. It looked a little better today, but it’s not the Sebbe we know when he’s at his best, so I believe and hope…, he says.

Northug and Samuelsson have grown closer in recent years, and the Norwegian is crossing his fingers that things will get better for him in the individual competitions that await in the WC.

– I know Sebbe well and hope he makes a championship that he is satisfied with.
