Pär Wiksten breaks down after Marit Bergman’s selection in So much better 2023

It’s Saturday’s So much better as it gets very emotional when Marit Bergman takes on The Wannadies’ hit “My hometown”.

The song was released by the Skellefteå band in 1990, and since then it has become something of an anthem in the north. In addition, it is a song that is strongly associated with Skellefteå AIK, who have the song as their national anthem.

But in Marit Bergman’s vintage, The Wannadies’ “My hometown” gets a twist. Her version has been titled “My Homeland”.

– It cannot be about anything, says Marit.

Marit has rewritten the lyrics so it becomes a song about class differences, anti-racism and what it’s like to grow up in different areas.

She sings, among other things, “From Sarek to Marstrand, from Husby to Drottningholm”, and later:

“Someone came across the sea, broken and bare, someone has the inherited china left, this is my homeland,” sings Marit.

Pär is noticeably taken by Marit’s interpretation, and tears stream down his cheeks. When they meet after the performance, Pär shakes with tears as he embraces Marit.

– Damn what you’re murdering. It’s our anti-racist song (anti-racist song, eds note) too, so damn clever. So damn nice, damn it.

– Exactly, replies Marit Bergman.

– What theme do you find then, says Pär.

– How good that it worked out, says Marit.

– Damn she nails that bastard. It was so nice. It will take a while to digest this, says Pär later.

So Much Better is broadcast on TV4 Saturdays at 8 p.m
