Restorer Hans van Dam is working quietly on the first floor of the Woerden City Museum. With a kind of cotton swab he rubs the more than hundred year old painting by the Woerden painter Cornelis Vreedenburgh. The canvas is quite dirty and could use a makeover, he sees. “Soot deposits from candles, particulate matter from cars, fireplaces, nicotine,” Van Dam lists.
