Paddle boarder facing Canada Shipping Act charge

A 42-year-old paddle boarder from Norfolk County faces charges after being helped to shore by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Norfolk OPP and the coast guard responded to an emergency call at about 7:19 pm March 25 about a paddle boarder struggling to reach shore. Police and the coast guard were notified of the paddle boarder by a Good Samaritan.

The coast guard responded to the call and brought the individual safely to shore. The individual has been charged under the Canada Shipping Act with operating a human-powered pleasure craft with out prescribed vessel safety and navigation equipment on board.

Norfolk OPP is encouraging everyone venturing onto the water to carry all necessary safety equipment and charged cellular phone in case of an emergency.
