Over 30 dead in train crash in Greece

At least 32 people have died and 85 people have been injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train near the city of Larissa in Greece on Wednesday night, according to the TV channel ERT.

Several train carriages have derailed and at least three of them have caught fire. The emergency services are searching for people who are feared to be trapped in the carriages.

– The effort to free trapped people is ongoing under difficult conditions, says fire brigade spokesperson Vassilis Varthakoyiannis.

The majority of passengers have been brought to safety, he adds.

350 on board

About 350 passengers were on board the passenger train from Athens to Thessaloniki, according to train operator Hellenic train.

It was a very powerful collision. This is a terrible night, Costas Agorastos, regional governor of the Thessaly region, told Greek television.

Around 150 firefighters and 40 ambulances have participated in the rescue work, according to the Greek rescue service. Cranes have been deployed to lift rubble and the derailed wagons and the army has been called in to help, Greek authorities said.
