The new touchscreen-based phones replace the old handset ones that have been a fixture outside of OPP detachments for decades.

The function of the new phones remains the same, allowing users to connect directly with the OPP’s communications center for service. When a user touches the call screen, communications center staff are able to see where the call is coming from, a feature that saves the call-takers time and provides the public with more confidence, police officials said on Friday.

The new phones have been installed outside 20 of the 34 detachments in the OPP’s west region, an area that encompasses Southwestern Ontario.
