One of the most expensive German series ever has finally

In 2004, Frank Schätzing’s bestseller, Der Schwarm, was published. After several failed attempts, almost 20 years later we can finally talk about the first film adaptation of the subject looking forward. Hollywood greats like Ridley Scott and Uma Thurman were once traded for the adaptation. Now everything has turned out very differently.

The swarm appears as an eight-part series of events on ZDF. The 40 million euro production will premiere in February at the Berlin International Film Festival. The TV broadcast took place a few weeks later. The first episode of The Swarm is on March 6, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. on ZDF.

New sci-fi series: Nature strikes back in The Swarm

The swarm tells of mysterious events that shake civilization. It starts in the depths of the oceans and spreads across the world. Hostile whales, dangerous crabs and a previously unknown ice worm are up to mischief. Apparently nature takes revenge to the people for their reckless behavior.

But what exactly is behind the mysterious swarm intelligence? This question is a group international scientists on track. The cast includes Barbara Sukowa, Krista Kosonen, Cecile de France, Joshua Odjick, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Eidin Jalali and Takuya Kimura.

Dark star Oliver Masucci and TV presenter Klaas Heufer-Umlauf also play important roles in the ensemble of complex production which was initiated by ZDF. The international cooperation partners of the European Alliance include France Télévisions, Rai, ORF, SRF, the Viaplay Group and Hulu Japan.

ZDF has high hopes for Der Schwarm and publishes it to accompany the broadcast of the series various documentation. Among other things, a Terra X special is planned that deals with swarm intelligence and a documentary that illuminates and classifies the story of The Swarm from a scientific perspective.
