One of the best strategy games finally gets online multiplayer on Steam after 22 years

Few games shaped the childhood of MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus as much as Stronghold. Now a remaster is coming to Steam with a feature that the ancient strategy game desperately needs.

What kind of game is this? In Stronghold you play an aspiring commander who is tasked with avenging his father’s death. You dive into the intrigues of various medieval dukes and have to fight them.

Stronghold takes place in a medieval world, in which you can even partially reenact historical battles. At its core, the game is a strategy game, roughly similar to Age of Empires, but with a few key differences:

  • Castle building is an important aspect, you have to build strategic walls and defenses.
  • Raw materials are not simply “used”, but further processed into armaments, weapons and co.
  • Your people must be happy. Provide it with beer, religion and food to be able to collect taxes and train soldiers.

    • This is new now: On July 14th, Firefly, the studio behind Stronghold, announced a remaster of the game. As Stronghold: Definitive Edition, the game will be available on Steam on November 7th, even with full German soundtrack.

    In addition to improved graphics, new options and even single-player content, the remaster gets a very important innovation: online multiplayer via the Steam server. This is something the old Stronghold games in particular have needed for years.

    Stronghold is a piece of childhood for me and hurt me more and more

    I grew up with Stronghold. The first part and the sequel Crusader, along with a handful of other titles, are the games that I used to play the most as a child and teenager.

    The only problem with the series was: since the first part it got worse and worse. Stronghold, the first part, is by far the best. Crusader was still at the same level, after that no game in the series even came close to the quality.

    The mixture of castle building, sieges, life simulation and real-time battles are unique in Stronghold. No other game does that so well. For the colleagues at GameStar, Stronghold is one of the best strategy games of all time.

    Although Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader can still be played without any problems, it is very difficult to play with friends. Connections have to be laboriously set up via LAN emulators such as Hamachi or Gameranger, which then only rarely hold up, if at all.

    Accordingly, I am really happy about the remaster and will definitely play with friends for the release. For me, the announcement was something of an unexpected birthday present, even though it’s not even my birthday.
