Omicron alarm in the UK: The number of cases increased to 160! Obligation to test for those coming from abroad

Due to the Omicron mutation of Covid-19 in the UK, the government has tightened travel rules. British Health Minister Sajid Javid announced that as of 04:00 local time on Tuesday, 7 December, all passengers arriving in the UK from abroad must obtain a negative PCR test result at most 48 hours before their travel.

“WE HAVE INCREASED CASES IN CONNECTION WITH TRAVEL”

“Since we learned about Omicron, we’ve kept the data under review over the past week and we’ve seen an increase in cases in connection with travel,” said Javid.

After the statement of Health Minister Javid, the PCR test requirement, which the UK government removed for people who had 2 doses of vaccine against Covid-19 months ago, has been reinstated. All travelers arriving in the UK are required to have a negative PCR test result, regardless of their vaccination status.

NIGERIA ADDED TO THE RED LIST

Javid also stated that Nigeria was added to the red travel list and stated that Nigeria came right after South Africa, according to the figures in the Omicron cases found to be related to travel. Javid stated that as of 04:00 on Monday, December 6, all passengers arriving from Nigeria to the UK must apply a 10-day hotel quarantine in accordance with the red travel list rules.

The UK has so far added South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Esvatini, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Nigeria to its red travel list due to the Omicron mutation.
