Ohio enshrines the right to abortion in its Constitution

The right to abortion will now be enshrined in the Ohio Constitution. Since the end of constitutional protection of this right by the Supreme Court in June 2022, it was the 7th time that voters in a state were asked to vote directly on the question. And for the 7th time, they voted in the same direction.

Ohio, like Kansas (which maintained its constitutional guarantee on the right to abortion), is nevertheless considered a solidly conservative state. The message therefore seems quite constant and clear. Other results support this. Elected two years ago, the Republican governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, hoped to win a majority in local assemblies with the stated intention of taking advantage of it to limit access to abortion. The latest projections show that he will not be able to do so.

In a Kentucky traditionally conservative, Governor Andy Beshear had chosen the right to abortion as one of the axes of his campaign. Voters gave him a second term. He is one of the Democratic winners to whom Joe Biden made a congratulatory phone call. After a start to the week marked by polls that were not very encouraging for him in 2024, the president is not shying away from the pleasure these results bring him.
