Nuclear weapons exercise northeast of Moscow

Russia is conducting a military exercise with nuclear weapons units east of Moscow, Russian media report.

About 1,000 military personnel practice with Jars’ robotic systems, which can fire intercontinental robots capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads longer than 1,000 miles. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, more than 100 such units are used in the exercise and the participating unit is said to practice transporting, maintaining and camouflaging them, among other things.

The unit that participates in the exercise is part of the so-called Strategic Robot Forces (RVSN), which handles most of Russia’s nuclear stockpile.

The exercise takes place in Ivanovo Oblast, almost 300 km northeast of the Russian capital.

The JARS systems were also used in two exercises in early February, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, notes the Russian media channel RBK.
