In Ireland the monarchy remains a divisive subject

A new monarch is therefore seated on the throne of England. Charles III who was crowned on Saturday (May 6, 2023) is now king of Great Britain, 14 sovereign Commonwealth states and Northern Ireland. The leaders of the five main political parties in Northern Ireland traveled to London to attend the coronation. But, in the Northern Irish capital, Belfast, only one community celebrated this transfer of power followed by the whole world. A recent poll shows that only four in ten people support the monarchy in Northern Ireland. Among them, nationalists and unionists – mostly Protestants – for whom maintaining their relationship with the royal family goes hand in hand with that of their British culture.
