The Vietnam War mainly opposed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (also called North Vietnam) and its ally, the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (known as Viêt Cong) to the Republic of Vietnam. Overall, the Vietnamese conflict sees confronting North Vietnam, under Soviet domination, and South Vietnam, under Western influence. It is the communist agitation led by the Viet Cong, in the south, which worries and triggers the war.
