When a forecast or weather conditions pose a considerable danger on roadways, Norfolk County may declare a significant weather event.

In the event of such a declaration street parking is not allowed so that the entire road can be plowed and sanded.
“Vehicles parked on roads when winter weather is expected may be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s expense,” said a press release from the county. “Norfolk County’s parking bylaw requires parked vehicles to be moved off the road during and after snowfalls and winter storms or when a significant weather event is declared.”
Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel, and to exercise caution while using county roads and sidewalks.
County resources are only deployed to address snow or ice accumulation if it is safe and practicable to do so and may take longer than normal to make thoroughfares safe to use again, said the release.

Snowplowing first takes place on primary roads, then rural and concession roads, followed by low volume roads and residential subdivisions.
Property owners or occupants are required to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property by noon following a snow event. Failing to do so can result in a charge under the snow and ice removal bylaw.
Trails and pathways can be a risk to pedestrians and cyclists because they are not maintained during the winter season.
Extreme cold temperatures and wind chills can pose the threat of hypothermia and frostbite.
Seniors, people with chronic illnesses or who spend greater periods of time outdoors, young children, and those with inadequate clothing or shelter are at a greater risk when such warnings are issued.
Under such conditions an extreme cold warning will be issued through media outlets, on the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit website at www.hnhu.org/news-events/, on the @NorfolkCountyCA X (formerly Twitter) account, and the Norfolk County page on Facebook.
Residents can follow local weather forecasts and alerts on the WeatherCAN mobile app or Environment Canada’s website at weather.gc.ca.
