Nils van der Poel has for some time dominated the world top of skating.
During the Olympics in Beijing 2022, he won double Olympic gold and set a new world record.
Now it is clear that the 26-year-old will be awarded Svenska Dagbladet’s achievement gold.
Nils van der Poel stood for a mega-success during the Olympics in Beijing 2022 when he took home double Olympic gold for Sweden, and he did it in superior style. Among other things, the Swede broke his own world record in the 10,000 meters and thereby consolidated his role as the great Swedish Olympic king.
Take home the Bradguldet
Van der Poel also took home the Olympic gold in the 5000 meters after a huge upset against the Dutchman Patrick Roest. The Swede crossed the finish line 47 hundredths ahead of his competitor while also breaking a new Olympic record and giving Sweden its first Olympic gold in skating in 34 years.

And for his efforts during the year, Nils van der Poel is now awarded the prestigious Bragdguldet.
“For Olympic feat, a legendary and ground-breaking career that put a golden edge on a classic Swedish parade event,” reads the jury’s justification.
– I don’t really know what to feel. I know about what I did in a way that very few others know about, he told Svenska Dagbladet after receiving the award.
After Nils van der Poel received the Bragdguldet, he was interviewed by Svenska Dagbladet – and then something unexpected happened, to say the least.
Strange interview
The reporter asked how van der Poel will now occupy himself when the skates will not take up as much space anymore – since his career ended after the Olympic Games. The answer he then gave came somewhat unexpectedly.
– Mainly with heroin, he says, which causes the reporter on the broadcast to completely freak out.
Van der Poel then explains further.
– I’ve been thinking for a month about what to say in this interview, I haven’t come up with anything clever as you might notice, says Nils van der Poel before both himself and the reporter burst into laughter.
