There were double victories for Sarah Sjöström in the final part of Mare Nostrum. But her success was preceded by problems in the pool.
– Has never happened before, says Sjöström to SVT.
Semifinals in Monaco had to be canceled on Sunday when the water in the pool became cloudy, writes Dagens Nyheter.
The reason was a pump that lacked electricity and could not clean the water. The problem then became that the swimmers could not see the lines at the bottom to know how close they were to the wall, the newspaper writes.
At 6 p.m., the competitions could start again. Instead, it was a direct final for Sarah Sjöström, who competed in the 50 meter freestyle and butterfly.
Could still deliver
And there were double victories for Sarah Sjostrom. First in the 50 meter butterfly with the impressive time of 24.95, which gave the 30-year-old a clear victory.
– I am very happy with the races, it was a long wait due to problems with the quality of the water. It’s never happened before, I’ve had thunderstorms cancel or postpone, this was something new. But it went well, says Sjöström to SVT Sport.
Half an hour later it was time again, in the Olympic distance 50 meter freestyle. Sjöström’s winning time was then written at 23.84, which is the second fastest time of the year. Even the fastest time of the year was Sjöström’s.
– It’s great every time I’m under 25 seconds in the 50 butterfly, and under 24 in the freestyle is great! That’s where I want to be, I want to have a high level but I feel that there is still more to achieve in the 50 free, says Sjöström.
Swedish success
At both distances, familiar names were found in the second places. In 50 butterfly each Louise Hanson second fastest, with a time of 26.16 – just three hundredths ahead of the Dutch Tessa Giele.

In 50 free it was Michelle Coleman who took second place in a time of 24.48, which is her fifth career best time.
The competition is part of the swimming tour Mare Nostrum and is the last of three sub-competitions.
