New Star Wars game wants you to experience the criminal underworld as a villain

Star Wars Outlaws is set to be the first open-world game in the popular franchise. This time, however, you shouldn’t experience the universe from the perspective of the Jedi, the Empire and the Sith, but rather get an insight into the criminal underworld.

What is Star Wars Outlaws about? Star Wars Outlaws is the first open world game in the Star Wars universe. The game from Ubisoft’s development studio Massive Entertainment (Far Cry 3, The Division 1&2) is scheduled to appear in 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC.

This time, however, you don’t take on the role of a Jedi or other fighter of the “good side”, but rather immerse yourself in the criminal underworld.

You play as the young outlaw Kay Vess, an outlaw who is looking for work and constantly has to fight for her survival in the universe. Kay doesn’t seem to care about the fate of the universe. In any case, it’s not more important than securing your next paycheck.

Developers are looking forward to an original villain story: In an interview with Kotaku, director Navid Khavari now talks about the upcoming game.

Above all, he makes it clear that the developers are happy to finally be able to create an original villain story in this universe. “There’s something exciting about looking at this universe from the perspective of a villain like Kay, who has no experience with the Empire, Jedi, Rebels or the Sith,” reveals Khavari.

In Star Wars Outlaws, players will truly experience what it means to survive in the underworld. Kay should be exactly right as the protagonist. “This is a character who is just trying to get by – stealing, outsmarting and deceiving the people,” is how Khavari describes the young villain.

Because without Jedi skills, Kay has to rely on other things and colleagues and tries to find her way in a world that she doesn’t yet fully understand. The developers hope that players can identify with her a little.

The story about a villain in the underworld should work well primarily because the developers decided on a very specific time period in an intensive exchange with Lucasfilm.

The year between “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi” is said to be full of intergalactic crime, because at this point the Empire rules the galaxy with an iron fist.

“The rebels are on the defensive, and while everyone is caught up in the civil unrest and distracted, there is a vacuum that provides the underworld with the perfect opportunity to grow and gain power outside the gaze of the Empire,” explains Khavari.

What can you expect from the gameplay? Khavari talks about Star Wars Outlaws gameplay. The players are particularly interested in what this should look like in the first open-world game in the franchise.

Khavari describes gameplay in his interview as three different types of experiences:

  • You go to busy cities and canteens, full of crime and corrupt imperialists
  • You experience adventures in a large, mysterious and impressive open world
  • You can explore the galaxy on Kay’s ship
  • Traveling the galaxy freely and according to your ideas was particularly important for the developers in order to get the right feeling across. “One of the core tenets of the roguelike fantasy is having your own ship, which is essentially your home,” says Khavari. Typically for an outlaw, Kay is constantly traveling and so you can easily move back and forth between planets with your ship.

Khavari describes the options you will have in the game: “If you deviate from the given path, your willingness to explore will also offer you some surprises. So you can start with a mission to steal an Imperial shipment, but get distracted on your speeder and drift off into the Toshara Desert to search for artifacts, and the game will reward you for your curiosity.”

The question of how the criminal aspect affects the gameplay also becomes interesting. Khavari says that you can change Kay’s reputation with various quests. This then influences the jobs offered and the course of the story.

You should meet familiar faces, such as Jabba. With your decisions and actions you then determine your relationships with these characters.

A very popular game in the franchise is SWTOR: The Star Wars MMORPG is still successful today – that’s why players love SWTOR even 12 years after its release
