New shooter in Unreal Engine 5 takes place in one of the biggest sci-fi MMORPGs on Steam – starts testing in December

At Fanfest 2023, the developers of EVE Online presented their latest project EVE Vanguard in more detail. As revealed last year, this is a first-person shooter. However, there is more to it than initially expected, because it is completely compatible with EVE itself.

What is Vanguard? A shooter in and for EVE Online, that’s how the developers described their creation. This is the FPS project from CCP London, which was already roughly presented at Fanfest 2022.

The game places great value on an authentic environment and wants to be “more than a normal shooter in EVE style”. So said the developers at the fan festival. The core features of EVE Vanguard are as follows:

  • Standalone shooter, but firmly connected to EVE Online. Player actions in both games affect resources, economy, wars and more in the other game.
  • However, you shouldn’t have any disadvantages if you only want to play Vanguard and not EVE Online.
  • In the game itself you are a foot soldier on a planet with several players and NPCs. There you will receive various missions and can collect loot. If you die, your character is lost along with the loot and equipment, but your “spirit” lives on in the next clone soldier, so it’s a kind of extraction shooter.
  • Vanguard relies on Unreal Engine 5 and will initially launch with a hand-designed map set around a shipwreck on a planet. If the link with EVE Online continues, player ships could also meet their final end here after being shot down in EVE space.
  • Later, it is conceivable that Vanguard soldiers will receive direct orders and missions from players and corps in EVE Online. EVE Online players can imagine the module separated from the rest, similar to the wormholes.

Starting in December for selected players

When can you try Vanguard? The first tests will start in December and will also be connected to the MMORPG EVE Online. Vanguard does not start individually and is then integrated, but should be linked from day one.

Any player who has an active Omega subscription can take part in the test. This is the larger version of the optional subscription to EVE Online. However, this is only a time-limited test.

It is currently not known when the final launch will take place or when an open beta will take place. Details such as match length and number of players have not been mentioned at this point.

The fourth attempt at an EVE shooter

There were already shooters in New Eden: However, EVE Vanguard is not CCP’s first attempt to bring a shooter into its own universe. In addition to the discontinued NOVA project, which was canceled before the planned release in 2020, there were two other attempts.

In 2013, CCP launched the shooter Dust 514. It should also bring influences from EVE Online, but function independently. The title was released Free2Play on the PS3, but was discontinued just three years later in 2016.

During this period, namely at the EVE Fanfest 2014, the developers announced another shooter, Project Legion, but it also disappeared into obscurity.

After Project NOVA was finally discontinued in 2020, the developers already announced that they would be working on a new shooter with the basic framework. However, it is not clear whether this was Vanguard. However, the developers emphasize that they have learned from their mistakes and are finally able to make the game they always wanted to make.
