New MMORPG on Steam relies on 19 hard raids, now throw the combat system overboard: “Was incredibly boring”

The MMORPG War of Dragnorox relies on old school feeling, tough raids and dynamic battlefields. But the combat system was too boring for the developers themselves. So much is changing now that not even the name stays the same.

What kind of game is this? Above all, so that everyone is up to date. War of Dragnorox not only changed basic game mechanics, but also its name. The MMORPG is now called Eternal Tombs, but it’s still the same game at its core.

Eternal Tombs aims to offer an old-school experience with a modern twist. Above all, the Unreal Engine 5 helps as a substructure for the project. You should also measure yourself regularly with developers. The MMORPG offers the following features:

  • Dynamic battlefields where a dungeon master controlled by a studio employee takes control of the game world and presents you with different house challenges every day
  • Every day there should also be other events, quests and resources in the world
  • Minimalistic UI without damage numbers, map and co.
  • Sandbox open world without clear guidelines and with tough opponents. Eternal Tombs is supposed to be a difficult game
  • There should be 19 different raids right at the start
  • Little magic, a lot of physical damage, even with the 6 different classes
  • Progression happens mostly through equipment. The perfect armor is supposed to make you five times as strong as other players at the same level
  • A slow-moving tab-targeting combat system designed to evoke early genre classics

What’s different now? The “tab targeting” combat system in particular has always given the developers a headache, as they answer in a QA on Discord. So at some point in the development of the combat system you noticed that it wasn’t really fun.

“Without the nostalgic feeling of being in a game you’ve been playing for 20+ years, the combat system was incredibly boring and tedious,” the developers’ response read. Instead, they are now building a system that is said to be “incredibly fun and absolutely unique”.

With such a big change to one of the core pillars of the game, they also wanted to rename the whole project to reflect the massive change. In any case, people “always had mixed feelings” about the old name.

The whole game will be presented in detail next month

How is the game going? Next up is a full showing of Eternal Tombs in August, which they recently announced in a teaser trailer. Whether that will happen at gamescom is questionable. However, it would work out in terms of the time span.

The game was originally supposed to be released in Q3 2023, but that’s probably no longer the plan at the moment. When asked about the release date, the developer’s website says: “We kind of always make a false statement here, so we don’t make any at all for now. It will come when it is ready.”

Otherwise, the original vision of the game remains, as does the fair payment model. Eternal Tombs is to be released with a subscription of around €10 per month, but does not offer any Pay2Win or an in-game shop. There is also no Kickstarter program, Eternal Tombs is 100% privately funded.

How are the fans reacting? Absolutely positive. The comments below the teaser trailer are filled with anticipation and even the name change is well received.

  • JaggedWinter says: “I like the new name, it gives me the idea of exploring dungeons with his friends. The old name always made me think more of a book than a game.”
  • Shanebrain writes, “This looks really good, I look forward to seeing more.”
  • Rykkeanu asks if the new combat system will also have real-time blocking, to which the devs reply, “you know the answer,” which we should interpret as “yes” at this point.
  • CastPasFaux says: “I really can’t wait any longer, hurry up!”

What do you think of the new name? Do you like Eternal Tombs? And do you like the restructuring to a new combat system? Does a snappy battle with nice Unreal Engine 5 graphics still count as an old-school MMORPG? Or is it just a wild mix in your eyes? Write it to us in the comments here at MeinMMO.
