New MMORPG on Steam has the highest system requirement of the genre

Perfect New World is a new MMORPG that will start beta on Steam in May. There it has significantly higher system requirements than WoW, Black Desert or New World. Now the developers have published almost 9 minutes of gameplay and show what makes the game special.

What kind of game is this? The new MMORPG will be the successor to Perfect World, which we released in 2005 and which, thanks to Free2Play, was an alternative to WoW for many. It relies on a Chinese game world, Unreal Engine 4 and action-packed battles.

Details about the game and especially about the upcoming beta test in May have now been revealed in a new video:

  • When creating your character, you have the choice of 3 classes, each of which is linked to 3 different races. However, further classes are to follow before the release.
  • The game world should be completely open. There will be four different zones for the test, each with a different theme. One zone is supposed to be full of puzzles, another emphasizes group content like boss fights and Dracopolis will probably be the capital with a mix of Chinese and steampunk elements like airships.
  • In the game world there should be random events that appear and in which you can then participate.
  • You will be able to glide with wings in the open world.
  • Perfect New World gets an action combat system without the ability to “log in” a target. So you always have to actively aim your skills. There are also combos that change your attacks, such as when you throw enemies into the air.
  • It’s a bit unclear at the moment how the PvP is doing. Although an arena is shown, it has neither been confirmed nor denied whether there are also fights in the open world.

The combat system is good, the performance is not

What is striking about the trailer? The world of Perfect New World is very reminiscent of the visuals of games like Swords of Legends Online or Revelation Online, two Chinese MMORPGs that have had a mediocre take on the West. Only the big jumping puzzles in Mechanopolis and the steampunk elements in the capital stand out a bit.

There is praise in reddit and under the YouTube video, especially for the combat system. It looks very action-packed and dynamic.

Each character also has at least 10 normal skills, two spirit skills and four slots for consumables such as potions or buff food. The abilities should change slightly through combos and chain attacks – for example if you hit enemies in the air – which increases the total number again.

In terms of the sheer number of skills that can be used, this puts you well ahead of current titles such as New World and Bless Unleashed or the upcoming games Throne and Liberty and Blue Protocol, which will only offer 7 skills.

However, there is great criticism for the performance. Although the player is almost always alone in the video, there are heavy FPS drops in some scenes. The level of detail of the graphics and the fact that the MMORPG is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 and not the newer 5 also cause ridicule.

What stands out here is that Perfect New World has extremely high system requirements. The minimum requirements according to Steam are:

  • Operating system: Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7-5700X
  • Memory: 32GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700
  • DirectX: version 11
  • Storage space: 70GB
  • For comparison: WoW relies on the 4th generation processor and NVIDIA GTX 900 series for graphics, GW2 even only needs an Intel i3 2.8 GHz and an NVIDIA GTS 250 as a minimum requirement.

Even modern titles like New World (Intel Core i5-2400 and NVIDIA GTX 670) or Throne and Liberty (Intel Core i5-6500 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060) are significantly lower.

Perfect New World is set to appear on Xbox and PS5 in addition to PC. Publisher Perfect World is also working on 3 other MMORPGs, including a mobile version of Perfect New World, which will be standalone, similar to Black Desert Mobile.

What do you think of the new MMORPG? Does Perfect New World appeal to you with its combat system and content, or would you rather wait for another title?
