New find reveals more about life as a slave in the Roman Empire

The “Prison Bakery” is the latest in a series of finds still being unearthed from the unexplored parts of Pomeji.

The small room that is now displayed has no view of the outside world. Instead, there were small windows with iron bars high along the walls where a little daylight could seep in. Here, slaves and donkeys were forced to walk around for hours to grind grain into bread.

– The site tells about the very precarious living conditions of enslaved people and animals used for this hard work, says Gabriel Zuchtriegel, head of Pomeji’s archaeological park.
