New champ in LoL starts terribly, is directly in last place

The newest champion in League of Legends crash-landed. A few days after launch, Smolder is the worst of all the characters.

When a new character launches in League of Legends, many stare at the first few days of performance. When it becomes apparent that a new champion is too weak, then there is great disappointment – and that seems to be the case with Smolder. A few days after the release of the little dragon, it is at the bottom of the food chain – and is behind all other champions.

What’s wrong with Smolder? The newest champion in League of Legens crash-landed – at least if you look at the statistics. If you take a look at the win rates of the individual champions, you have to scroll very far down to find Smolder (via u.gg). The little dragon is in last place with a win rate of around 43%, even behind other catastrophically rated champions like Ezreal or Sylas.

Is that bad? No not really. It’s completely normal for a new character to have a difficult time getting started in League of Legends. Because at the beginning, various factors come together that ensure that a champion’s win rate initially plummets as long as he is not completely overpowering:

  • A new champion is played by many who just want to try it out – and then have little idea about the corresponding role.
  • It takes time to fully understand a champion and their potential and to fully exploit them. That’s why most people play very suboptimally at the beginning and lose to those who have a much better command of their champs.
  • In addition, Smolder has a fairly high skill ceiling – so it takes a lot of experience to get good performance from his kit.

It usually only takes a few weeks for a new champion’s win rate to level off on its own. If that’s not the case and Smolder is still at the bottom of the list in 2 or 3 weeks, then League of Legends will probably think about buffs.

Have you tried Smolder yet? How do you like the little dragon?

As much as the developers would like to hide it, the layoffs at Riot will have an impact on LoL.
