Walter and Skyler White’s relationship defines much of Breaking Bad

Episode 11 of Season 6 Better Call Saul also plays largely in the black and white timeline in which Jimmy aka Saul (Bob Odenkirk) has started a new life in Nebraska as Gene. In a phone call to his former assistant, Francesca (Tina Parker), Gene can be updated on what has happened since he fled Albuquerque. We also learn what happened to characters from Breaking Bad after the explosion of Walter White’s meth empire.

Skyler White (Anna Gunn) have one Deal with the federal authorities closed, according to Francesca. So she appears to have shielded herself and her remaining family from further prosecution in exchange for information.

Also Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) seems off the hook. Already in El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, we learn that Heisenberg’s partner fled to Alaska. But Better Call Saul now confirms that diversionary tactics from the film came to fruition. Because they find Jesse’s car at the Mexican border, the authorities suspect that he fled to Mexico. And seem to have given up the pursuit for the time being.

However, this also means that the investigators are fully focused on Saul Goodman. All of his shell companies have been busted and the related money confiscated. Even Francesca is bugged and monitored. So Saul has to be even more careful not to get caught. A return to New Mexico seems impossible.

A scene between Saul and Mike changes the look of Breaking Bad

But Episode 6 not only looks back at the Breaking Bad timeline, it also shows Moments set during the second season of the original series – and which we have not yet seen. There’s the aforementioned appearance by Jesse and Walt. But the really exciting thing is a previously unseen scene between Saul Goodman and Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks).

After meeting Walt and Jesse for the first time, Saul wants to find out more about the meth cook and hires Mike to gather information on Heisenberg. When the two then meet in Saul’s office, an exchange ensues that gives us a whole new perspective on Breaking Bad.

As a reminder, this is how we meet Walter White in Breaking Bad

Because Mike is convinced that Walt is an amateur who will be caught sooner or later. He explicitly advises Saul against working with him, stating that Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) is also not interested in a cooperation. As we know, Saul made a different choice. What we didn’t know until now: The lawyer had no support in this decision and is therefore almost single-handedly responsible for Heisenberg’s rise to meth godfather.

It is only through Saul going it alone that Walt becomes the person who not only repeatedly eludes the authorities, but is also responsible for the downfall of Gus Fring and the deaths of several main characters. Breaking Bad might be Walter White’s story, yes Saul Goodman is the linchpin of everything. It will be all the more exciting how the story of this character ends.
