One of the most exciting Netflix projects of the year starts in March. The science fiction series 3 Body Problem not only adapts the acclaimed Chinese Trisolaris novel trilogy by Cixin Liu, but is also the new series work by Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff. And the streaming service spared no expense or effort to achieve this.
With a budget of $200 million, 3 Body is Problem the most expensive first season that Netflix has produced to date. That’s why it’s understandable that the Game of Thrones duo and co-showrunner Alexander Woo are doing everything they can to create the perfect series. And so they had the sci-fi epic postponed for a year because of a single scene.

As the showrunners revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, 3 Body Problem should actually start in spring 2023 – at the same time as the Chinese series competition adaptation Three Body. Although filming was completed in September 2022, the creative team was not yet satisfied.

The reason for the postponement: the perfectionism of the series creators. Because they really wanted to add an additional 5-minute scene. The Hollywood writers’ strike, which lasted from May to September 2023, massively delayed the venture:
We wrote the scene the day before the strike. It was literally five pages, but we really thought it was worth doing. Netflix was understanding. It would have been very easy for them to say: You have a finished series that’s ready to air and we should hold it back [für eine Szene, die] Two people in a bar for five minutes shows …
The showrunners didn’t reveal what exactly was so special about this scene. We’ll find out in just a few weeks whether the delay and effort were worth it.
When does 3 Body Problem start on Netflix?
The first season of 3 Body Problem starts on March 21, 2024 with all eight episodes on Netflix. The showrunners hope that the sci-fi series will be a success. Because in order to adapt all three novels, they say they would ideally need four seasons.
