Netflix releases sci-fi hit Rebel Moon earlier – and thereby breaks a golden rule

Netflix releases sci fi hit Rebel Moon earlier and thereby

Shortly before Christmas, Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire will be released on Netflix. This is where it all comes together: The high-profile blockbuster director Zack Snyder is starting a sci-fi franchise on the streaming service that, not coincidentally, is reminiscent of Star Wars. Actually, this release deserves a cinematic setting.

Netflix apparently thought so too: Two weeks before the launch, the streaming service is changing the usual process for releasing large-scale productions with a move that is unique to date.

Rebel Moon is coming early, but what exactly does that mean?

As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Rebel Moon opens in the USA on December 21, 2023. The original date was December 22nd. And that’s not all: Behind the shift there is apparently a more profound change in strategy. The streaming service doesn’t simply postpone the start for 24 hours. In that case, Rebel Moon would have landed on the platform on December 21st at around 9 a.m.

In fact, Rebel Moon is getting the first evening premiere of a blockbuster on Netflix: In the USA, the film will be available on December 21, 2023 from 7 p.m. This strategy is reminiscent of the previews of cinema multiplexes or the event film broadcasts of TV stations.

Netflix’s homepage should also look different than usual in the hours and days after the Rebel Moon release. Netflix created a kind of digital billboard:

It is currently not known whether the early start also applies to Germany. Moviepilot has asked the German Netflix agency for a statement.

What is Rebel Moon about?

The story of Rebel Moon takes you to a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy. Specifically, we find ourselves on the remote moon of Veldt, which trembles in the face of the Empire’s forces. The tyrannical ruler Balisarius (Fra Fee) comes with his soldiers from the mother world and wants to take control of the moon. It brings nothing but death and ruin.

Only the intrepid Kora (Sofia Boutella), who herself has a score to settle with the empire, stands up to the all-destroying superior force. She gathers a group of intrepid warriors to resist the oppressors. Although it appears that Balisarius’ armies are vastly superior, the battle for Veldt is not yet lost.
