Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has landed in Taiwan and says the trip is a support for democracy. China responds with threats of “targeted military action”.
Although it was close to midnight when she arrived in the capital Taipei, enthusiastic Taiwanese had gathered to welcome the top US politician.
– She is a hero. She has been brave enough to resist China’s pressure, said Pan Kuan, a resident of Taipei.
Taiwan functions in practice as an independent state but has only been recognized by 14 countries, though not the United States. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory and does not accept that other countries have relations with Taiwan.
