Myanmar’s military junta attacked a refugee camp – dozens died

Myanmars military junta attacked a refugee camp dozens died

Myanmar has drifted into a spiral of violence as a result of the military coup that took place more than two years ago.

Twenty-nine people were killed and dozens wounded in an attack by the Myanmar army on a refugee camp in northern Myanmar, a spokesman for the rebel group that controls the region told the AFP news agency on Tuesday.

The attack happened late Monday night, said a colonel of the Kachin Independence Army Naw Bu.

– We found 29 bodies, including children and the elderly. Another 56 people were wounded, Bu said.

The military junta usurped power in Myanmar in February 2022.

The coup caused massive protests and a bloody crackdown on dissidents. As a result of the coup, tens of thousands of people have been arrested and more than 4,100 have been killed, according to the local monitoring group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

The rebel army controls areas in Kachin state in northern Myanmar, home to the world’s largest jade mines. The area has been fought for decades.

The EU imposed sanctions on Myanmar’s military junta as a result of the coup. Sanctions were imposed, for example, on operators in the gemstone and timber sectors. The UN has warned that there is a risk of a large-scale civil war breaking out in Myanmar.
