Mummy star Brendan Fraser moves to tears with acceptance speech

We are in the middle of the awards season and are excitedly looking forward to the Oscars. One category seems to have already been decided: Best Lead Actor. While we’ve seen some strong acting performances on the big screen over the past year, there’s a clear favorite in Brendan Fraser.

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s drama The Whale has starred Fraser and has garnered praise for it since its Venice premiere. Now the next step to the Oscar has been taken: Fraser was at the Critics Choice Award as best actor, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

Big Hollywood comeback with The Whale: Brendan Fraser is well on his way to an Oscar

A touching highlight of the evening: Fraser’s acceptance speech, in which he briefly Hollywood experiences and thanks his co-stars. It got particularly emotional when he started talking about Aronofsky:

[…] And Darren Aronofsky, I was out in the wild and probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you found me. And like all good directors, you just showed me where to go to get where I needed to be.

A humorous dig Fraser also included in his speech:

It was Herman Melville who once wrote, ‘There are only five critics in America. The rest are asleep.’ I’m so glad you woke up for me. Where were you on Furry Vengeance?

Fraser is celebrated on Twitter for his speech.

“This man deserves everything”, commented a fan under a video of Fraser’s acceptance speech. Now let’s just hope Fraser isn’t forgotten again after The Whale and Universal finally greenlights a fourth The Mummy movie. Then that would be great Hollywood comeback completely.

When does The Whale start in cinemas in Germany?

Although The Whale has caused a stir since its Venice premiere, we have to be patient in this country for quite a while. The German cinema release of the new Aronofsky film will not take place until April 27, 2023.
