MSI 2022 will be held in South Korea

The starting leg of LoL Esports’ global competitive scene will take place in South Korea for the first time in history. The best teams from 12 regional leagues will compete from May 10-29 to highlight their unique character and skills and become the MSI Champion.

Naz Aletaha, Global Leader of LoL Esports, said, “South Korea has been one of the leading countries in the esports industry for years. We are delighted to host MSI in Korea for the first time, paying tribute to the country’s glorious history in the esports scene, the passion of Korean fans and the talent of professional teams. Busan, He hosted us wonderfully at the 2014 and 2018 World Championships. We can’t wait to return to Busan to watch the world’s best League of Legends teams compete.”

For the first time since Worlds 2019, the teams will take to the global stage in front of an international live audience throughout the entire tournament. Busan Cinema Center will host the Group Stage and Challenge Stage of the tournament. The four winning teams will meet for the Qualifying Stage at the Bexco Exhibition Hall. Ticket details will be announced later.

Tournament Format

The top teams from the 12 regions will compete in the Group Stage, Challenge Stage and Elimination Stage.

May 10-15: Teams will be drawn into three groups of four teams each, and will play a single match in their group in a duos league style in the Group Stage.

May 18-22: The top two teams from each group will advance to the Challenge Stage, where the six teams currently in the tournament will play a single match in a duos league style.

May 27-29: The top four teams will advance to the Elimination Stage, where their 5-match single elimination series will be played. After the teams have split their trumps, the last two teams will meet in the finals and the best League of Legends team in the middle of the competitive season will be determined. The victorious team will return home with the championship trophy and the title of 2022 MSI Champion.

Busan, the second most populous city in Korea, is seen as the home of esports. The StarCraft Brood War ProLeague finals took place from 2004-2010 on Busan’s 1.4 kilometer long Gwangalli Beach. In addition, Busan hosts the country’s largest annual game fair, G-Star. The coastal city is also known as the “Festival and Film City”, which shows the importance it attaches to culture, music and art.

Riot Games has previously held global events in South Korea, such as the 2014 and 2018 World Championships.
