Moving checklist: what are the essential steps?

A wedding, a birth, a new job. What good news. But news that sometimes leads to an observation: we have to move. And that’s less good news for many of us. Because moving is stressful. You have to sort. You have to make the boxes. You also have to organize the move. Think about a whole bunch of administrative procedures.

The best way to avoid losing ground is to get organized. Take the time to prepare everything with a clear head. Sort to avoid taking away things that have become useless. And do not hesitate to equip yourself with a checklist. A checklist and deadlines. Understand, a to do list, along with the deadlines by which they should have been made. Here are some points to keep in mind when writing them.

First, be aware that the procedures concerning the accommodation you are leaving are the most urgent. Just like those concerning the education of your children. With one exception, perhaps: if you move abroad. In this case, you will also have to prioritize the papers necessary for settling in the country that will host you.

Your old home and the children’s school

From electricity to La Poste via taxes

Then, between one month and two weeks before the fateful date, it will be a question of preventing all the organizations which have your address. As a priority, the tax office, the CIF and/or Pôle Emploi. Then, notify your insurance. In particular that of the house which will have to switch to your new place of residence without losing a moment. And don’t forget Social and Mutual Security either. Before you start looking for a new doctor, if you move too far from yours.

Other organizations to notify of your move: your suppliers ofenergy (gas and electricity), access Internet and telephony. Early enough, there too, so as not to have to suffer a cut when you move in.

Also remember to inform your bank and change your address on your car registration document. This can wait a month after your move. It is therefore not the most urgent. And it is not essential to have your address changed either on your driving license or on your identity card. Wait for a renewal to do so.

Finally, there are your various subscriptions, your delivery services, your credit organizations, etc. And to avoid losing important letters, ask La Poste to track your correspondence. The service is paid, but the diverted mails will help you to know to whom you forgot to serve your new address.
