A new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 released at the EVO 2023 event confirms the return of legendary character Reptile, along with other fighters from the series’ past.
Many fans of the long-running fighting game franchise have been waiting for this announcement after developer NetherRealm Studios and series creator Ed Boon gave the latest hints on Reptile’s return on social media.
Reptile finally returns with Mortal Kombat 1
Reptile, as one of the most iconic characters in the series, made his debut as a hidden boss in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. Since its first appearance, Reptile has become an integral part of the series. This shape-shifting fighter has appeared in dozens of Mortal Kombat games as a playable character through in-game cutscenes. Reptile’s return was confirmed in the “Banished” trailer released at EVO 2023.
Other fighters are also introduced
The trailer introduces the in-game roster to three fighters who have apparently been banished by their respective communities. In addition to Reptile, who was excluded from her community for her ability to return to human form, Netherrealm demon Ashrah and Havik are featured in the trailer. The surprise addition of these three intrepid fighters to Mortal Kombat 1’s starting roster will be a surprise that will please longtime fans of the series.
The trailer also showed that Ashrah won’t be the only Netherrealm demon in Mortal Kombat 1. Shape-shifting assassin Sareena appears as a Cameo fighter who accompanies Havik to aid in a particularly brutal fight. Like other Mortal Kombat 1 characters announced so far, each of these new fighters appears to have a drastically altered story in the reshaped world shaped by Fire God Liu Kang.
This is particularly evident in Reptile’s case. Because the fighter, who is traditionally known as a villain, seems to be working with the forces of good in the new trailer. With Mortal Kombat 1’s September 19 release date approaching, developer NetherRealm Studios continues to excite fans with each new character reveal.
