MontanaBlack has lost 43% of its viewers in 180 days

The German Twitch is changing in 2022. The most watched streamer for over 4 years, Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris, has lost his place at the top. In the last 180 days, it has lost 43% among average viewers. Because he also streamed less, his watch time actually dropped by 70%. It is striking that MontanaBlack still talks as much on Twitch as in 2021, but he hasn’t played as much for a long time.

Who are the big losers among the top German streamers on Twitch? If you look at which of the major German Twitch channels lost the most average viewers over the last 180 days, you can see:

  • MontanaBlack lost 43.3% of its average viewership
  • Jens “Knossi” Knossala lost 46.3% of his average viewership
  • Streamer xRohat lost 51.9% of its average viewership over the past six months
  • MontanaBlack’s career and life in 2 minutes: what makes him special?

What is the reason for the drastic viewer loss? It is noticeable with all 3 streamers that they have been seen significantly less on Twitch in the last six months than in the previous period:

  • MontanaBlack was 45% less on the air than it was the previous six months
  • Knossi is missing 36.5% of his hours on Twitch
  • xRohat was 40% less visible
  • So it stands to reason that if popular Twitch streamers are on the air less often, streams are canceled or shorter, the average number of viewers will also drop.

That seems to go with the old Twitch rule: If you want to grow, be on the air as often as possible. Advice that has already driven many a streamer into burnout.

2021 was also strongly influenced by the corona virus and the lockdowns, which generally drove up the Twitch numbers. But not all German channels fell in the last 180 days:

  • Streamers like eliasn97, NoWay4u_Sir or Amar were able to increase their viewership.
  • Other big streamers like Trymacs or Gronkh only lost slightly.
  • There’s even a huge winner in the form of abugok9999, which almost doubled its average viewership

MontanaBlack still talks as much as in 2021 – but plays a lot less

What is different about MontanaBlack now? At MontanaBlack it seems that he hasn’t found a game that really suited him in the last six months:

In 2021 he was mainly active in GTA Online with 484 hours, where there was a hype about role-playing servers. He also played Call of Duty: Warzone, FIFA 22 and Mario Kart. In 2021, the focus was still clearly on games: He spent 484 hours alone with GTA and “only” 400 hours in Just Chatting.

In the last six months, MontanaBlack’s focus has shifted: He is still as active as before in Just Chatting and has already completed 202 hours there in six months. However, MontanaBlack has greatly reduced his gaming time on Twitch and “only” spent 55 hours in GTA 5.

MontanaBlack doesn’t seem to be finding a game he likes right now. That fits with a general criticism that its “regular games” like FIFA or Call of Duty 2022 didn’t work the way they once did. Gambling on Twitch, from which he used to beneft heavily, is no longer allowed in Germany. His former love for Fortnite has long faded.

The viewers of MontanaBlack apparently want to see something like this again:

Nostalgia tournament in Call of Duty is the highlight of 2022 so far

What has been the highlight of the last few months? On June 26, MontanaBlack proved that he can still reach a large number of viewers: On that day, he was able to break the 100,000 simultaneous viewer mark on Twitch with a Black Ops 2 tournament. Spectators had waited a long time for the tournament, and it had to be canceled a month before.

Gaming and especially GTA 5 key to success in German Twitch

Can it be because GTA 5 no longer draws? In fact, GTA is still a key to success for German streamers. The Streramer abugoku9999 recorded the greatest growth in the last six months. He streamed almost 1000 hours of GTA V and has increased his average viewership by 92%.

The most successful German streamer, elian97, creates its audience figures with a mix of Just Chatting and various typical Twitch games such as Fortnite, Valorant, Falls Guys and the FIFA with which it once became famous.

The second most successful streamer in Germany, Noway4u_Sir is a ruthless League of Legends junkie and spends much of his Twitch time there.

So the key to success on Twitch in Germany still seems to be gaming. The “Just Chatting” clips are running excellently in compilations on YouTube, but they can’t seem to keep the number of viewers on Twitch up over the long term.

During the weak time on Twitch, MontanaBlack also experienced a personal crisis:

The largest German streamer is then away from Twitch: “At the lowest point of my life”
