Even monsters the size of a skyscraper sometimes come out of nowhere. At least that’s how it will seem to some sci-fi fans with Godzilla Minus One. The monster hit from Japan is becoming a major box office success thanks to enthusiastic fans and critics (via Metacritic). Now he has broken a record that had stood since 2004.

As Collider reports, the film grossed $1.23 million in a single day in the so-called domestic market in the US and Canada. Godzilla Minus One breaks a record for non-English language films, who set up the action spectacle Hero 19 years earlier. The epic starring Jet Li was released in the USA in 2004.

It’s not the first milestone the monster action has reached. According to IMDb, the sci-fi insider tip is the second best blockbuster of the year. With $48 million worldwide, the film has even now more than grossed three times its production budget (via The Numbers).

Seven years after Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One continues the original Japanese monster franchise about the famous giant lizard. The new film is set in Japan in the 1940s. There is no connection in terms of content to the US series, which will soon be continued with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
