MMORPG ESO explains the 2-hour queue on PC: “They messed it up”

The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online experienced unusually long queues on PC last weekend. Originally it was assumed that this was due to the many new players who now want to try ESO for free. But now the community manager Gina Bruno reveals: There were other problems.

This was the message:

  • Over the weekend, The Elder Scrolls Online experienced excessive queues. Players sat idle in front of the PC for up to 2 hours and vented their frustration about the long wait on social media.
  • These long queues were unusual because no new expansion had actually appeared that could cause such a hype.
  • Nonetheless, search interest in The Elder Scrolls Online had skyrocketed and was at its highest level in 2 years. We believed on MeinMMO that the sudden rush was due to the fact that some special promotions were coming together that made it possible to play ESO for free.

Team admits to mistakes in communication

This is what Zenimax says now: Community manager Gina Bruno spoke up on July 31, stating (via eso):

  • A lot of people actually played, including a lot of new players
  • But there was still a problem with the backend systems that caused the long queues
  • These systems had to be restarted. But because there were so many players in the queue, it took a while to get them into the game:
  • “We admit that we screwed up here communicating it to you and we apologize for it. We are already discussing ways to improve internal communication and ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”

This is the reaction: In the forum they say:

  • The wait was bad though
  • But it was even more annoying that there was no communication at all from the developers. The standard is to at least issue a “We’re working on it”/”We’ll take care of it”. Even small updates would help.
  • The majority of the players would like to thank Gina Bruno for clarifying what was responsible for the long queue.
