Minister Rantanens rant about Putin seeking asylum spread like wildfire

In the Ukrainian media, the topic was treated in a more neutral tone than in Finland’s eastern neighbor.

At the end of last week, the Russian-language opposition media SVTV News published on his Telegram channel excerpt from ‘s Thursday episode of A-Talk, the subject of which was the restriction measures needed for the eastern border.

In the paragraph shared by SVTV News, the Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen (ps.) compared the current situation to the fact that even the president of Russia Vladimir Putin could apply for asylum in Finland.

The video was subtitled in Russian.

– If we continue like this, especially in this situation, it means that anyone from anywhere in the world can decide that I go to Finland. This also means that when Vladimir Putin comes across the border from there and says asylum, he will stay here forever, Rantanen said.

SVTV News commented ironically on Rantanen’s statement:

– Prove, Vanja, that you are not Putin, and you will be allowed into Finland. There are many Putins, but there is only one functioning border crossing, the media captioned the video.

After the publication of SVTV News, the video of Rantanen’s Putin comment spread like wildfire on Russian-language social media. Both opposition media and pro-Kremlin media drew attention to this video.

They wrote about it elsewhere Federalpress, Krasnaya Vesna, Donpress, Info power and Zmaps.

Some magazines and YouTube bloggers used rambling and misleading headlines in their news and video, such as “Finland is ready to give Putin asylum” and “Finland offered Putin asylum“.

The Ukrainian media also did not ignore Minister Rantanen’s statement. In Ukraine, they made news about it Politika Strani, Novini Live, Allkharkov, Informator.ua and Inncorr.

The Ukrainian media is treating the news in a neutral tone, although Politika Strani said in its news that Rantanen’s comment was “ridiculous” and Newformat.info published the story in the section of the online magazine, which has a category of “curiosity”.

It has also been shared on TikTok Ukrainian subtitled video of Rantanen’s comment.

In the episode of A-Talk, the chairman of the Left Alliance talked with the Minister of the Interior Rantanen Lee Anderssonchairman of SDP’s parliamentary group Titti Tuppurainen and the chairman of the Christian Democrats Sari Essayah.

In between Rantanen’s speech, it was pointed out that the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin.
