Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen (co.) according to the US aid package for Ukraine does not solve the war, but it keeps Ukraine’s “nose above water”.

Häkkänen estimates that the aid package will give Europe a breather.

The US House of Representatives voted on Saturday in favor of a new $60 billion aid package for Ukraine. The aid package, which had been stalled since September, was finally approved after six months of waiting by a vote of 311–112.

In the minister’s opinion, Europe’s conclusion should be that Europe itself needs to do more and faster.

– No speeches. Not relying on the fact that there is some NATO article five, but there really has to be stuff. There must be plans, there must be strong armies, the defense industry and operational capability, Häkkänen said in Monday’s A-studio.

Häkkänen pointed out that US foreign policy has had different emphases throughout history.

– Sometimes we isolate ourselves, sometimes we participate more, Häkkänen said.

Häkkänen said that he will meet the US Defense Minister in two weeks.

The EU did not report any new arms aid openings

The foreign and defense ministers of the EU countries met today, Monday, but did not make concrete decisions in support of Ukraine.

Häkkänen said that he did not expect any decisions from the meeting.

– I am confident that in the coming weeks several countries that are not exactly on the Russian border will understand the seriousness of this situation, Häkkänen said.
