Nine people from the Chinese military, including four generals, have been allowed to leave the country’s parliament, according to the state news agency New China.

The decision was announced after a meeting of the Central Committee of the ruling Communist Party late on Friday night, with no further explanation as to why the officials are being let go. But since Defense Minister Li Shangfu was abruptly fired in October, there has been a high-level reshuffle within the military establishment.

During Friday, Dong Jun was also appointed as the new Minister of Defense in China.

China is a closed country with very little transparency for outsiders. But fighting alleged corruption has long been a central theme of President Xi Jinping’s rule. The sacking of the MPs could mean they are under investigation, according to US-based consultancy Sinoinsider, which follows Chinese politics.
