Middle East G7 condemns Iran Everyone must avoid escalation

(Finance) – An unequivocal condemnation of the Iranian offensive, but also an invitation that extends to all parties involved in the Middle Eastern fire, including Israel, to refrain from actions aimed at heightening tension in the Region. This is the message sent by G7 leaders urgently summoned yesterday via videoconference by the rotating president Giorgia Meloni, at the urging of the United States. At the end of the discussion, the G7 leaders – as announced by Palazzo Chigi – adopted a joint statement strongly condemning the launch of drones and missiles from Iran, reiterating full support for Israel’s security. The G7 underlined the need to avoid further escalation, inviting the parties to refrain from actions aimed at heightening tension in the Region.

“Together with the G7 leaders, we unanimously condemned Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel – said on President of the European Council Charles Michel –. All parties must demonstrate restraint. We will continue all our efforts to work towards reducing the tension. Ending the crisis in Gaza as soon as possible, particularly through an immediate ceasefire, will make a difference. The situation in the Middle East, including Lebanon, – she announced – will be discussed at next week’s European Council.”

“We, the Leaders of the G7, – reads the joint statement on Iran’s attack on Israel – We condemn unequivocally and in the strongest terms Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack on Israel. Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel which, with the help of its partners, defeated the attack. We express our full solidarity and support with Israel and her people and reaffirm our commitment to her safety. With its actions, Iran has taken further steps towards destabilizing the region and risks provoking uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation. In this spirit, we demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives. We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and provide increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need.”

From the G7 meeting chaired by Giorgia Meloni – said yesterday Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani – “clear signals of support for Israel and condemnation of the Iranian attack have arrived, but the message is also that of bringing peace, inviting both parties not to start other military operations. We need to understand what will happen in the next few days, at the moment the situation seems less tense to me. The G7 is also working to promote a ceasefire in Gaza and to send food supplies to the population, and we hope that the parties involved will listen to us, an escalation would not benefit Tajani will continue contacts with partners in the coming days. On Tuesday he will see the Canadian Foreign Minister, on Wednesday the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and then he will preside over the G7 in Capri with the situation in the Middle East at the center of the agenda.
