The former German chancellor also said he opposed plans to admit Ukraine as a NATO member because he wanted to prevent the situation from escalating with Russia.

Former Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel says that while in office he tried to prevent the situation that Ukraine is in today. Merkel says she doesn’t blame herself for not trying hard enough.

– It is hugely sad that it did not work, but I do not blame myself for not trying, said Merkel, referring to the 2014 Minsk agreement with Russia.

Merkel appeared in public for the first time since she resigned as Chancellor. He spoke on the German ARD channel.

Merkel further said she opposed plans to admit Ukraine as a member of the NATO Defense League because she wanted to prevent the situation from escalating with Russia. In addition, Merkel says she thought Ukraine was not ready to join NATO.

According to the former Chancellor, there is no justification for Russia’s disregard for international law in Ukraine.

Merkel points out that it is impossible to go through the centuries and see which country belongs to someone. According to him, it only means war.
