Mental illness may be part of German school attack

The man has admitted that he carried out the attack on two girls, aged 7 and 8, with a kitchen knife. He is suspected of attempted murder and causing bodily harm.

“There are no indications of the suspect’s motive,” but there are said to be signs of a mental illness “possibly caused by drugs,” according to a statement from prosecutors.

The man is receiving psychiatric care pending further investigation.

Both children are still in hospital with serious injuries. The condition of the older child – who initially had life-threatening injuries – is stable, according to the prosecutor.
