Mary Poppins actor dead turned 100

John, considered one of the last living stars of Hollywood’s golden age, died at a Los Angeles residence on Thursday, her manager confirms Mitch Clem.

He says it’s a day of mourning in America’s film capital.

— She is the very last one from old Hollywood, says Clem.

Had a long career

Glynis Johns was born in 1923 in South Africa, then part of the British Empire, but grew up in England. Her dad Mervyn Johns was himself a famous actor.

Glynis John’s career spanned eight decades with around 60 roles on the silver screen and around 30 on stage. She was known, among other things, for the premiere in 1973 of “Send in the clowns” in Stephen Sondheimpp Ingmar Bergman-based Broadway musical “Summer Night’s Smile”. A role that resulted in a Tony Award.

On film, she played against, among other things James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich in “Without return” 1951 and against Sandra Bullock in “Medan du sov” in 1995. In 1961 she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the drama-comedy “Viddernas vagabond”.
